Summary on Grant Application Form |
The new Daresbury Station 9.8, which has recently been set up and will come on-line for general use in Autumn `97, makes it possible to use single crystal procedures to determine the structures of materials available only in the form of powders too small in size for conventional single crystal techniques to be used. Ceramic nitrides fall into this category and for the last 30 years, structure determinations have been carried out predominantly by x-ray powder methods. The project will use the new Daresbury station to carry out structure determination on phases where there is still current debate (e.g. a-sialons, polytypoid phases, La3Si8N11O4 and then determine structures of a range of currently unknown ternary and quaternary nitrides in the Y-Si-N, La-Si-N and related systems. Various other current Newcastle programmes are generating new nitride phases and these will also be explored. The latter include new N-containing pigments/glazes being developed to assess the range of colours exhibited by oxynitride ceramics. The carbothermal nitriding route will be used as an ideal route for preparing suitable-sized single crystals of the new phases. A quick assessment of ceramic properties will also be made for all new phases explored.
