Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme involves the study of the new phases of matter which occur in two-dimensional (2D) hole systems at high magnetic fields:We will examine the transition to an insulating state in very dilute samples, the regime in which the Wigner crystal is predicted to occur in ZERO MAGNETIC FIELD, using simultaneous transport and photoluminescence measurements. We will also study the regime of higher densities, where the interesting phenomenon of re-entrant FQHE states is expected, as a result of competition between the FQHE and the crystal state. We will make the first spectroscopic measurements of the effective mass of the composite fermions responsible for the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), using our novel milli-Kelvin photoluminescence excitation technique. This will clear up the current controversy over transport measurements of this quantity, and is also a new way of measuring the FQHE energy gap, a quantity central to our understanding of the effect. We will determine the optical signatures of the FQHE in 2D hole systems, as a function of the interaction between the 2D holes and photoexcited electrons, providing valuable new data upon which to base theoretical calculations, and yielding a photoluminescence measurement of the FQHE energy gap.
