With the aim of propelling the field towards realistic device scenarios, the proposed research picks out the important recent discovery that photorefractive materials sustain three generic types of solitons. A number of key objectives will be achieved by addressing four key areas which are * the need to generate an entirely new model to access improved response times for photorefractive soliton theory and its device prospects * a deep study of photovoltaic solitons to design a novel range of materials * the dynamical behaviour stability of all the generic photorefractive soliton types. A very high priority will be given to the specific area of * improved response times * vector photorefractive solitons * cascading * dynamical behaviour * photovoltaic solitons. Other areas that will be addressed, with a lower priority are * influence of optical activity * parametric interactions * modulation instability * incoherent light trapping * higher-order solitons * higher dimensional effects. The project will investigate a whole range of materials to extend their applicability to telecommunication wavelengths. The e pivotal investigation will be the development of an entirely new time-dependent model.
