Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall goal of this research project is to improve understanding and hence control of industrial deformable roll coating systems which can be operated with either a fixed (positive) or pre-deformed (negative) gap setting. The main reason for their use, is that they can produce much thinner films, when operated in negative-gap mode, than can be achieved with fixed-gap rigid roll coaters, while avoiding/delaying the on-set of the ribbing instability. A sequence of mathematical models, validated experimentally, is to be developed for the prediction of (a) the equilibrum flow characteristics, including the effects of asymmetries - pressure fields, elastic deformation, gap profile, meniscus locations, flow rate; (b) the stability of the base flow, in particular the propensity for ribbing, as a function for the elastic properties of roll coverings under various operating conditions - gap setting and fluid properties. Similarly, both non-Newtonian, shear thinning fluid effects and the use of a simple visco-elastic model for the elastomer will be explored with his information it will be possible to map out operating windows of industrial relevance.
