Summary on Grant Application Form |
The scope of this project is focused on the fundamental development of the understanding of the origins of agglomeration in gas and liquid phase continuous systems via a predictive model. It is proposed here to develop a novel approach relating the microscopic interactions between particles, binding liquid and surrounding medium to the microscopic kinetic and fracture energies of the agglomerates themselves. A quasi-static model has previously been derived to predict rupture energies of liquid bridges between particles in gas phase continuous systems. A current project, due to end in July 97, has focused on the development of novel instrumentation to measure liquid bridge forces under a range of physico-chemical properties. Results so far indicate the limitations of classic liquid bridge theory, in terms of bridge geometry and constant bridge volume. The latter has been observed to decrease in certain situations due to the shift in the balance between adhesive and cohesive forces. It is proposed here to pursue this work further by developing the dynamic measuring capabilities of the instrument and studying liq.sol.liq systems, important in selective mineral agglomeration processes.
