Urban nonpoint sources (NPS) contribute a diverse range of pollutants to receiving waters, limit the effectiveness of investments in point source control and act as a barrier to reaching water quality objectives. This research aims to develop a computer based decision support tool to map and model urban NPS and their pollutant yields, under existing conditions and future development scenarios, particularly those related to land use. An existing operational system for water supply catchments, developed with ESPRC ROPA funding and subsequent water industry support, provides the model for developing a parallel urban system to quantify the NPS water quality hazard. The research will integrate existing urban catchment models using a risk based approach, within a GIS environment, allowing land use and environmental planners to (I) assess development impacts on water quality (ii) identify the least sensitive development sites and (iii) target resources available for remedial surface management measures. The tool is designed for urban planners and Environmental agencies so that land use and water quality conflicts can be resolved, river and ground water quality improved, thus benefiting the public and the environment.
