|
The programme is aimed at a deeper understanding of the mechanics of dispersion of pollutant in the surf zone. Our interest relates to the combined effect of the pollutant in damping the wave breaking and the effect of the breaking process in dispersing the material throughout the water column. The aim is to predict conditions under which different types of pollutant will be either dispersed or washed up on the beach. Emphasis will be on petrochemical and detergent dispersing agents, drawing inferences for allied effects of insoluble /soluble materials on surf zone behaviour: viz, polymeric surfactants present in sewage and industrial discharges. The programme will involve laboratory tests in a wind wave flume, using the measuring techniques of particle image veolcimetry and laser induced fluorescence to quantify velocity patterns and dispersion rates. The process will be simulated with a computer model. The project will benefit from technical input from the DERA.
