Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will build on existing work in the collaborators departments on water recycling technology linking with water utilities and the Building Services Industry Research and Information Association (BSRIA). The study will be undertaken in three phases. The first phase, undertaken by Cranfield, will identify and quantify the risks of contamination for a range of water qualities, recycled water types and uses and assess public receptivity. A formalised preliminary risk analysis will be followed by a risk perception exercise based on workshops involving stakeholders, e.g. consumers, water companies. This risk perception will be based on a combination of surveys and fieldwork. Following a workshop to combine knowledge on contamination risk and public perception, the results will be used to assess water-recycling technologies. The experimental work will investigate water quality parameters in pilot-scale processes under investigation at Cranfield. Results will also be included in a process model to be developed at IC/NTU. Additional analyses identified as key issues in the risk and receptivity studies will be undertaken. Following a second workshop to collate results, the third phase will assess the feasibility of incorporating the identified reuse technologies within buildings in cities, taking into account risk and receptivity.
