Summary on Grant Application Form |
Visual information systems have recently become the focus of a great deal of search activity. Image database systems consisting possibly of thousands of images are now widely available on many computer systems. To avoid tedious exhaustive searches, users of such large image databases need efficient ways of retrieving relevant images from the database. While retrieval by texture or colour properties has received a reasonable degree of attention, little work has been carried out elsewhere on image database retrieval by shape content. The recent experience gained by the authors forms the basis of this proposal. The Curvature Scale Space (CSS) representation is a combination of invariant features of a planar contour detected at multiple scales. It has been utilised successfully by the first author as a robust shape analysis tool. A 3-D variant of the CSS representation is currently under development as part of a current EPSRC project supervised by the first author. This proposal plans to develop methodology based on CSS representations for robust and efficient retrieval based on shape content from large image databases.
