Summary on Grant Application Form |
Transition metal complexes of phosphorous (III) ligands have been widely applied in homogeneous catalysis in industry and small-scale laboratory synthesis. We propose to make a class of phosphorus- based ligands, diphosphonites, which hitherto have not been explored for applications in catalysis. These will be simple to make and stable under normal conditions. Complexes with the precious metals will be made and their structures established by spectroscopic and crystallographic techniques. By extrapolating from related systems, complexes of our new ligands should show high activity and selectivity in hydrogenation, hydroformylation or hydrocyanation catalysis and thus may find application in the petrochemicals or fine chemicals industries. The project will build on well-established procedures developed in this group and is thus highly suited to a studentship. The catalysis will be carried out in collaboration with DuPont under the CASE scheme.
