Summary on Grant Application Form |
The field of supramolecular chemistry, which has evolved rapidly over the pat few years, is essentially concerned with the study of intramolecular interactions, for example the binding interaction between a host anthracenyl groups will be synthesised and studied. Anthracene derivatives are versatile in that these groups provide a means of not only studying the interaction between a host and its guest, but also actually affecting the strength of the interaction, by the application of either an optical or an electrical impulse. Initial studies have found that this type of system has led to the first example of a reversible switch between a crown ether and a cryptand. Further studies are expected to establish these compounds as iono- and electro- and opto-photoswitches, in which the binding, electrical and luminescence properties of each system are governed by its photo-state. Such systems are linked to the goal of generating molecular sensors that give a measurable response to cation complexation and molecular switches that will be used in optical data storage/display devices of the future.
