The inherent simplicity of the effervescent atomiser, and its high quality atomisation at low gas/liquid injection flows, lends itself to a wide variety of applications. Particularly burners in furnaces and stationary engines where the additional air pressure does not carry restrictive penalties. The lack of information upon how geometric features influence atomisation performance, however, is a serious obstacle to efficient design. This study aims to develop a computational fluid dynamic model capable of fulfilling this design requirement. Photographic and laser particle sizing will be used to characterise the shapes and sizes of bubbles, liquid ligaments and droplets in the internal and external flows of a 2-dimensional atomiser purpose designed to have high optical access. Mathematical sub-models of bubble and liquid ligament dynamics and their transition to droplets will be developed and encoded into a commercial fluid flow code and the model validated against the experimental data from this study.The predictive accuracy of the model will be finally evaluated by simulating published experimental spray data of more realistic atomiser designs.Design methodology, effervescent atomisation, computational fluid dynamics, bubbly flow, laser particle sizing, liquid ligament, convergent flow.
