Summary on Grant Application Form |
Methods of synthesis and fabrication of composite electrode materials will be investigated in an effort to increase the specific energy of rechargeable lithium cells. The particle size, shape and orientation of the electrode material will be controlled by influencing the course of crystal nucleation and growth during electrodeposition of the required materials directly onto substrate films which may also act as current collectors. The intergranular spaces will be filled with polymer electrolyte channels which, being directed along the shortest path to the current collector, will provide sufficient ion transport with minimum dilution of the electrode capacity. The film deposition methods developed may also be useful in applications outside battery technology, e.g. solar thermal absorbers.
