A series of novel water-soluble betainised/quaternised block copolymer surfactants and heteroarm star copolymers based on tertiary amine methacrylates will be synthesised by group transfer polymerisation. The effect of varying the solution pH and ionic strength on the surface activity and micellisation behaviour of the block copolymers will be assessed using surface tensiometry and static/dynamic light scattering, respectively. The aqueous rheological properties and gelation behaviour of the star copolymers will be characterised using a Haake rheometer and variable temperature NMR spectroscopy. Selected deuterated block and star copolymers will be synthesised for neutron reflectivity and scattering experiments in collaboration with Dr. Thomas (Oxford U.) and Dr. Tuzar (IMC, Prague), respectively.
