Summary on Grant Application Form |
Several commercial ceramics made by vitrification (a firing process where large quantities (over 50% of liquid form) will be characterised. These will include whitewares based on porcelain and bone china used for electrical insulation and decorative ware, and glass ceramic systems for bioceramic applications. The microstructural evolution on firing the powders will be examined using a range of techniques such as mercury porosimetry and transmission electron microscopy on quenched samples. An understanding of the microstructural evolution will enable improved ceramics made in this manner to be developed.
