Summary on Grant Application Form
The present programme proposes a new turbulence modelling approach which will be based on the derivation and modelling of evolution equations for the coherent structures. The aim of this study is to develop a better understanding of the patterns of wall-region structures, their dynamics, especially the role play in the case of steady and periodic turbulence flows. In contrast to the double-decomposition which is the traditional approach to the statistical treatment of turbulent flow, the proposed approach will make use of the concept of triple decomposition in which the variables consists of three components: the spatial mean, the coherent field and the instantaneous field. Evolution equations for the coherent stresses will thus be derived and will be modelled using energy stability analysis. These equations will be validated against experimental results and DNS data for steady and periodic turbulent flows as well as for laminar to turbulent transition. Particular emphasis will be given to the study of physiological flows because transition and turbulence result in high wall shear stress and, subsequently cellular damage.
