Summary on Grant Application Form |
The mechanisms of phase transfer processes at solid/liquid interfaces - specifically the growth /dissolution of ionic crystals - will be investigated with novel scanned probe microscopy techniques, that will allow surface topography to be mapped at the nanometre level, while the local interfacial conditions are controlled and measured electrochemically. Two new combined electrochemical atomic force microscopy configurations will be introduced, and characterised experimentally and theoretically. Dissolution/growth processes will be studied on the well-defined cleavage surfaces of alkali metal halides and calcite, with the aim of obtaining new insights into the reactivity of targeted surface features, such as steps, terraces and dislocations.
