Summary on Grant Application Form
CFRP composites are fabricated from pre-lang laminae which are protected during storage by release films. On fabrication, release agents remaining on the pre-preg is incorporated into the composite. Recently we have shown that a release agent such as poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) can have a beneficial influence on the interlaminar toughness of laminates. In the present work we intend to investigate whether this observation can be exploited. To do this, we will: (i) investigate the mechanical properties of CFRP laminates, and (ii) employ ToF-SIMS to elucidate diffusion kinetics and interphase chemistry, as a function of type and concentration of additive species.
