Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal concerns the development of a multi attribute, high speed transmission technique based on code division principles amenable to optoelectronic implementation with application in multi user networks. The novel approach is a significant departure from mainstream activity and utilises a family of hybrid optical codes, the characteristics of which permit improved network performance when contrasted to existing code based proposals. The resultant network has several potential attributes: asynchronous operation; able to address a large number of users in a passive architecture; can support bursty and multi-rate traffic, and offers a natural increase in the security of transmission. The programme of research will be undertaken by two academic institutions with complementary expertise and has indirect support from a leading industrial company as well as significant interaction with a prestigious research institution from Japan. The research can be subdivided into three inter-related areas of code refinement, detailed system performance analysis and proof-of-principle demonstrations of key sub-system blocks.
