Summary on Grant Application Form
An ultimate goal in the mathematical modelling of turbulent reacting flows is the provision of a combustion sub-model, possessing sufficient economy for engineering calculations, which can accommodate finite rate chemistry effects, including local extinction, for partially premixed flames as well as the limiting cases of diffusion, and premixed flames. Existing combustion models fail to achieve this generality. Additionally, there are few, if any, soundly-based combustion models capable of treating the general case of partially premixed combustion. This proposal provides a sound combustion model embodying all of the sought features. The model will be based on the Lagrangian solution method for the pdf transport equation, recently devised within the applicants group. This method is economical and suited to the complex numerical grids required to describe equipment items. It has been successfully validated for turbulent diffusion flames subject to finite rate chemistry effects. It has here proposed to extend this method to embrace partially premixed combustion, and to refine the molecular mixing sub-model, a weak point of the pfd transport methods. The extended model will be thoroughly validated, and then demonstrated through an engineering application.
