Summary on Grant Application Form |
Turbulent reactive plume is a generic fundamental problem in fire science that is poorly understood due to its abrupt, transient and sometimes explosive nature. Current experimental techniques and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes based on Reynolds averaging are unable to provide accurate information about the complex interactions among turbulence, combustion, buoyancy and other factors that are present in the problem. Fortunately, the relatively low Reynolds numbers of many fire plumes make them amenable to direct numerical simulation (DNS), which is the only method for predicting truly unsteady phenomena accurately without turbulence modelling uncertainties. Two-dimensional simulations are to be performed on Cray J90 and three-dimensional simulations on Cray T90. The DNS results can be used to further our fundamental understanding and to validate empirical and semi-empirical models. These would contribute to better fire safety design, more effective fire hazards control and thus enhanced safety and quality of life.
