Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal brings together the expertise of participants at Queen's University Belfast, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), and York University, on the calculation of atomic data and the modelling of radiative properties of laser-produced plasmas. Our aim is to calculate highly reliable atomic data, including electron excitation, photoexcitation, radiative decay and recombination rates, for use in the modelling of experiments in X-ray laser schemes. These will include both collisionally pumped and self-pumping schemes involving nickel-like ions of gadolinium, tin, neodymium, samarium and tantalum. The atomic data generated under the auspices of the proposal will be incorporated by the applicants into their modelling codes, used in the design and interpretation of experiments performed at the Central Laser Facility at RAL. However the results will also be used by collaborators elsewhere in the UK and abroad, and additionally will be made freely available to the laser community.
