Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main objective of this proposal is to develop a resin dispenser and sensor system to render the filament winding manufacturing process cleaner, through greatly reduced resin wastage and use of solvents. This resin delivery system will replace the resin impregnation bath which is used in conventional manufacturing equipment. Resin and hardener will be dispensed separately and mixed immediately prior to impregnation of the fibre tows. Flow control will be via a feedback mechanism using data from optical fibre-based sensors whish will monitor mixing efficiency, impregnations efficiency and cure progress of the mixed resin. The sensors will be adoptions of optical fibre-based refractive index and near infrared transmission probes, developed recently at Brunel for in-situ cure monitoring of composite resin systems. The 'clean technology' benefits of this novel, integrated approach to the filament winding manufacturing process will be assessed.
