Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research will develop computer -based models for the prediction of microstructure in Ni-base superalloy forgoing, which are destined for critical components in modern gas turbines. Validation will be undertaken by state-of-the-art microstructural characterisation together with both industrial- and laboratory- and laboratory- scale simulations. Critical aspects of the microstructural evolution will be characterised through the manufacturing stream, from the pre-supplied billet to the forged component, as delivered to the end-user. The successful application of this approach will result in;(a) improved process control and efficiency.(b) reduced time-to-market in the application of evolutionary alloys.(c) a greater understanding of the factors which result in defects in superalloy forgiving.
