Modern communication systems are required to have increasingly powerful and efficient error-correcting codes, so as to improve the overall systems efficiency and reliability. Future communication systems will require yet more data to be transmit4ed and with still greater efficiency. Traditionally, linear codes have been used for these purposes since there exist well-developed encoding and decoding methods. However, a limitation to the use of codes is set by the number of nearly orthogonal codewords available within the code length. A solution to this limitation may be found in several families of nonlinear codes which have more codewords than comparable linear codes.The proposed research programme aims to design and evaluate methods for utilising nonlinear codes in practical communication systems. We aim to construct method which can be applied to produce separable codes where possible, thereby allowing the construction of minimal trellises.
