Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research collaboration which is to be discussed will encompass furthering the innovative research field of `Grain Boundary Engineering' whereby polycrystalline materials can be fabricated so as to perform better in service and to resist intergranular degradation. The research group in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has recently set up a ten-year initiative to work in this area. The applicant also works in this area and has many publications relating to it, including a recent book entitled `The role of the coincidence site lattice in grain boundary engineering'. Informal discussions have already taken place between the applicant and Dr Wayne King of the aforementioned laboratories with regard to possibly setting up a joint workplan. The principal experimental technique used to investigate grain boundary engineering is electric backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and the related new technique of Crystal Orientation Mapping. The applicant has only recently acquired this facility whereas the system is more established at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. Hence the applicant also wishes, during this visit to discuss collaboration, to study application of this new, state-of-the-art technique to grain boundary engineering.
