PhotoDoubleIonization (PDI) angular distribution measurements give information on the correlation of the motion of the electrons, particularly as they leave the target. While PDI of atoms has been of considerable interest in recent years, relatively little is known about the corresponding process in molecules. Recently Reddishs group at Newcastle has obtained preliminary spectra for D_2, measuring the angular distribution of both electrons with known energies. Hence it is timely to consider a complementary theoretical approach to this problem.In view of its success for describing angular distributions in atomic PDI we are guided by the work in Freiburg of Briggs group who have introduced an explicitly correlated final-state wave function. They have also shown that initial-state correlation is much less important for describing the angular distributions. Indeed much useful insight into these can be obtained by considering the relevant selection rules. Some of these are obtained from the symmetry of the final-state wavefunction while other s arise from the correlation effects in the final-state wavefunction.The proposal is to consider, as generally as possible, the PDI process for several linear molecules, taking account of the orientation of the internuclear axis and the possible dependence on the vibrational coordinate of the molecule.
