Summary on Grant Application Form |
Thin film crystalline Si (TFCS) is a promising material for low-cost solar cells if it can be deposited in sufficient thickness and structural/electronic quality on low-impact substrates, using a scaleable process. This collaborative project between South Bank University, Imperial College, CCLRC (Central Laser Facility) and BP Solar is aimed at investigating such an approach on glass and glass-like crystalline growth. The latter will include in-situ techniques and ex-situ excimer laser crystallization. Characterization of film microstructure and electronic properties using a wide range of methods including relatively new SEM 9scanning electron microscope) EBIC (electron beam induced current) techniques. Will provide information to aid optimising growth and processing. TFC solar cells will be fabricated and characterized to enable an efficiency of >10% to be demonstrated in ECR-prepared structures for the first time.
