Summary on Grant Application Form |
Franchising has been widely used in service industries but very little in manufacturing. With increasing globalization if industry and the need for manufacturers to be agile in meeting customer requirements in diverse markets around the world, franchising provides a new means of seizing business opportunities. Manufacturing franchising has potential in two principle ways: - Outward expansion: Franchising offers the prospect of quicker expansion into emerging markets, with reduced capital investment requirements while assuring quality levels.- Inward investment: Franchising may be a means of growing the local supply base for foreign OEMs operating in this country. This research project will examine types of business which may gain competitive advantage from using franchising, and franchising in relation to other forms of venture. Main work tasks will include studying the potential of franchising for inward investment and, working with collaborators, studying the means by which franchising can be used for outward expansion, and the benefits and risks which can arise.
