Summary on Grant Application Form
The surface of glass has considerable importance at an environmental, technological level as well as being of scientific interest. It is well-known that surface degradation of glass can occur when it is in contact with an aqueous environment. However little is known about the mode of degradation and the corrosive pathways. Moreover, although some work has been using specular reflection there has been little contact between the theory of non-specular neutron reflection and experimental results from glass. We propose to set up a reactor to degrade the surface of commercial and pure glass under a wide range of conditions (e.g. temperature, pH and ionic strength). We will characterise the degraded surfaces by Neutron Reflection measurements and by various complementary methods such as electron microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy and X-ray reflectivity. We will then use the recently developed theory of off-specular neutron reflection to build models of the roughened surface which are consistent with complementary measurements. The evolution of the model structure with the reaction time and solution conditions will then be determined. The same methodology would then be applied to the structure of glass with additional coatings and/or adsorbed films which have buried interfaces.
