Summary on Grant Application Form |
Illustrations of the scope for a wide range of radical-mediated cascade ring-forming reactions are rife in the contemporary literature. Our own research group has contributed in a significant way to these developments, and new and novel strategies to a range of biologically important polycyclic constructs have been forthcoming. The project plans to develop this general area by : a) introducing and developing new electrophores e.g. cyclopropane and letene; b) incorporating design, i.e. pre-organised acyclic chains and tethers; c) exploring radical-accelerated Diels-Alder, electrocyclic and Paulson-Khand processes, in concert with radical cyclisation; d) expanding our recently discovered method for steroid-ring constructions from polyene acyl radicals, via sequential 6-endo-trig cyclisations, to bio-active steroids and their analogues; e) applying the principles of cascade radical processes in the synthesis of meaningful synthetic targets of biological importance , e.g. taxol, steroids, poly-quinanes.
