Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this investigation is to develop a generic model for the simulation of underwater sonar systems. This model will be unique in that it will permit the visualisation of the physical characteristics of the sonar process by creating synthetic sonar images of the form produced by the actual sonar systems. The model will achieve this by simulating the underlying physical processes which result in the generation of sonar images. The model will include realistic seabed topographies and sediment types, the transducer characteristics and the effects of the acoustic propagation in the water column. The generic structure of the model will enable it to simulate a range of sonar geometries including sector-scan, forward looking and multi-beam sonar with possible extensions to synthetic aperture sonar. The simulation of sonar images will permit the systems which has not previously been possible. The model will have applications in a broad range of areas and can be used to fulfil a variety of roles including the design and testing of new sonar systems, the training of sonar operators, the testing of processing algorithms and the interpretation of sonar data.
