|
IT applications contribute to many areas of health care, but are usually operated by trained healthcare professionals, whose time is limited and expensive. If these applications could be made user friendly enough to be used by the patients themselves, then the patients quality of life could be very significantly enhanced. We will devise a set of guidelines and provide a human actors methodology that can be used to re-engineer proven health care software packages to make them more suitable for integration into the wider community. We will also produce a set of guidelines for the use of strong security measures (authentication and encryption) that will allow such packages to be used reliably across public networks such as the Internet. As a vehicle for the research, we will work with the existing MICRODIET software package - a proven package, licensed to every UK Health Authority, that analyses the diets of diabetic patients. We will improve its usability, by adding a multi-media front end, convert it into a client server system and incorporate strong authentication and encryption. Working with the NHS we will determine the most appropriate way of extending the boundaries of IT clinical applications, through the inclusion of patients.
