Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research project is broken down into 7 tasks. Task 1 is to develop an in-situ infra-red technique for observing rhodium catalyst species within the polymer support under reaction conditions. Task 2 is to correlate catalyst carbonylation behaviour with the nature and distribution of catalyst species between the polymer support and the bulk liquid. Task 3 is to identify the factors which control the strength of the catalyst-support ion pair interaction and determine their influence of catalysis. Task 4 is to quantify the distribution of all liquid and determine their influence on catalysis. Task 4 is to quantify the distribution of all liquid components between the polymer support phase and the bulk liquid phase. Task 5 is to design and synthesize optimized novel polymer supports based on the outcome of earlier tasks. Task 6 is to evaluate novel polymer-supported ion-paired rhodium catalysts in carbonylation. Task 7 is to explore the application of polymer-support ion-paired Rh catalysts in the hydroformylation of higher alk-l-enes. Task 1 will be led by the Sheffield parter; Task 2 by B.P.; Task 3 by Sheffield and J.M.; Tasks 4 and 5 Strathclyde; Task 6 B.P. and Task 7 by Strathclyde.
