Summary on Grant Application Form |
A research programme is proposed in which the predicitve capabilities of advanced turbulence models are to be investigated by reference to well-documented complex flows containing a range of generic flow features which appertain to practical external and tubomachine aerodynamics. The proposal is based on the premise that a closely co-ordinated collaborative effort involving a leading university and industrial groups is the key to making rational decisions on the choice of turbulence models from within the most promising model classes for complex aerospace flows.Important operational issues such as separation and wave drag, lift at cruise and high-lift conditions (including stall limit), and the efficiency of turbojet engines are strongly affected by the physics of the associated flows. These decisions are therefore crucially important, both technically and economically, and it is this realisation which has led to the formation of the present consortium. The project is to focus on eight carefully selected test cases - some generic, others close to practice and one type complementing the other - for which well-regarded experimental data exists. The crucial element of the programme is collaboration, tight control over implementation and numerical issues and close interaction between the partners.
