Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project aims to develop a general computer programme for predicting fluid dynamics processes associated with fires in building enclosures on the basis on an existing large eddy simulation code. Key physical processes which contribute to fire hazards, such as hot-gas and smoke spread, thermal radiation and chemical heat release will be simulated. Detailed combustion will not be treated but could be added if needs arise in the future. The code will be calibrated against established experimental data and then used for generating accurate numerical databases of industrial relevance. Such databases aer highly desired for detailed validation of turbulence models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes based on Reynolds averaging. The research will be conducted in collaboration with the Fire Research Station and promises to provide a next-generation predictive tool for the Built Environment Industry.
