Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal addresses the need for new crosslinking systems for use in water-borne coatings. This need has become more evident in recent years due to environmental pressures which have forced the coatings industry to seek alternatives to the conventional solvent-borne coating systems. Our proposal seeks to apply well-established dyestuffs chemistry to the crosslinking of latex coatings. New functional monomers containing the hydroxyethlsulfone group will be synthesised and used in emulsion copolymerization with standard monomers (e.g. Butyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate) and other complementary commercially-available functional monomers (e.g. with hydroxyl or acetoacetoxy groups) to prepare latex copolymers in which the particles contain all the functional groups necessary for crosslinking, i.e. one-pack crosslinking latex's. During film formation from the latex, the loss of water will trigger dehydration of the hydroxyethylsulfone groups to give vinyl sulfone groups which will readily react with pendent hydroxyl or acetoacetoxy groups, thereby forming crosslinks. Crosslinking will be monitored (i) indirectly (principally by determining thermal and mechanical properties) and (ii) directly (principally by spectroscopic methods). We expect that the work will lead to patentable information which will be of value to all polymer latex manufacturers and formulators with interests in crosslinkable coatings.
