Summary on Grant Application Form |
With Professor Lipsitt's extensive experience in alloy development he will work in the group in the IRC that has recently developed a series of TiAl-based alloys which have UTS values in the as-cast condition up to 1100 Mpa. There is still a large amount of alloy development work to do to optimise these alloys for use in the as-cast condition and to define precisely the composition range that should be patented in the final patent. It is going to be vital that a cheap, rapid casting technique is developed if these alloys are to be used in the automotive industry and Professor Lipsitt will be expected to contribute to developments in this area. In addition these alloys should respond to thermomechanical processing, which in principle could increase the strength to even higher values, and perhaps also offer a possibility of improved ductility, and Professor Lipsitt will contribute to this part of the programme as well.
