Summary on Grant Application Form
The work involves the study of the dynamic behaviour of the CFC-alternative, CF3CH2F, labelled with the radiotracers [14C] or [18F], on the strongly basic catalysts CsF or KF supported on highly fluorinated a-alumina. The study will enable the conditions required to achieve catalytic conversion of CF3CH2F to the carbanian [CF2=CF]- to be established. [14C]-Labelling will be used to probe adsorption/desorption phenomena and the subsequent surface behaviour of absorbed species. [18F]- Labelling will enable processes leading to F-transfer from CF3CH2F to the surface and any loss of F from the metal fluoride or fluorinated support to be qualified. Reactions between CF3CH2F and the simple electrophiles, I2, CO2, Me3SiCl and R1R2CO in the present of the catalysts will be used to make comparisons with analogous stoichiometric reactions involving [CF2=CF]- and to determine the feasibility of HF, generated from CF3CH2F, participating in subsequent reactions.
