Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of the project can be summarised as obtaining a better understanding of life prediction for aluminium alloys under VA loading in combined in-phase torsion-bend. Particular attention will be paid to identifying conditions which may lead to non-conservative linear damage summation models, and to the development of an improved model for early crack growth, intended to be applicable to weldments. This involves a detailed programme of experimental work, data from which will be input into a dislocation-based model of early crack growth. The results of the prediction exercise will be tested against S-N data from weldments and from specimens where the `reinforcement' has been machined off to allow crack growth to be followed. Preliminary attention will be given to linking stress data from a FEA of the weld geometry into the crack growth model.
