|
The aim of the proposed research is to develop and analyse epidemic models that incorporate the household structure of human populations and heterogeneities owing to e.g. age, sex and response to vaccine. Stochastic models for the spread of an epidemic among a closed heterogeneous population consisting of a large number of small households, with different infection rates for within- and between- household infections will be considered. Attention will be focused on determining threshold parameters for major epidemics to occur, estimation of parameters governing the spread of disease from household final size data and the development and evaluation of vaccination strategies. Extensions of the basic model to include demographic effects and even more realistic hierarchical population structures will be considered. The mathematical theory will be supported by extensive simulation studies.
