Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed joint project is to develop an improved insulating system of epoxy impregnated tape for machine insulation. The morphological and ageing properties of the new systems will be determined at Strathclyde.Selected samples based on an epoxy containing combinations of aluminium oxide (improved thermal conductivity) and zinc oxide (non linear electrical behaviour and surge supression) prepared by the University of Manchester will be subjected to accelerated ageing produced by application of high voltages and temperatures.Changes in the breakdown chrarateristics (impulse and ramp) loss tangent (50 Hz), partial discharge activity, thermally stimulated discharge currents, dielectric loss spectra (wide frequency range) and the response to fast low voltage pulses will be determined. Correlations will be sought between the above and the ageing time and between the measured parameters themselves. Corona discharge induced effects on the surface electrical properties (resistivity, dielectric loss and charge decay) will also be measured to give indication of resistance to partial discharge activity.Resin impregnated tapes containing zinc and aluminium oxides will also be examined.
