Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will involve a systematic comparison between the shear and extensional flow properties of aqueous polymer solutions and polymer thickened latex dispersions. The extensional viscosity will be determined using the recently-introduced Rheometrics RFX Rheometer which is a stagnation point device and ideally suited to study such systems. The polymers chosen will vary in molecular mass, persistence length and charge density and empirical scaling to these parameters and polymer and particle volume fraction. Models will be developed in order to predict the rheological behaviour based on the approach of Barnes and Roberts who has used the constitutive equations of White and Metzner. A key feature of the project will be to draw correlations between the rheological properties and adverse characteristics such as stringiness, poor mixing of liquid concentrations and formation of cobwebs on spraying. Specific procedures will be developed to quantify these parameters.
