In this study we propose to investigate model particle gels under gelling and shear breakdown conditions using two complementary techniques - Virtual Gap Rheometry (VGR) and Discrete Particle Computer Simulation. These two techniques can probe sufficiently high frequencies (or equivalently, short enough time-scales) that are characteristic of the individual building units of the gel-forming system so that the mechanics of gel formation and breakdown can be related to the interaction laws between the particles. The VGR will be used to monitor the low strain and high frequency evolution of model particle gelling systems under growth and shear breakdown conditions. The gelling/breakdown processes will be characterised using frequency and strain rate dependent dynamic moduli as a funtion of time during these processes. The simulations can model the same systems (e.g., aqueous based charged latices) as the VGR giving the dynamical moduli as a function of time and shear rate. The simulation technique will furnish structural information to help elucidate the simulated and measured dynamic rheology,allowing process control and texture determination in real products to be placed on a firmer scientific basis.
