Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a rhetorically-oriented interface to a speech synthesis system. The realism and usefulness of the interface will be tested by using it to interface a state-of-the-art speech synthesis system with an existing natural language generation (NLG) system, to produce speech output of the kind that could give a museum visitor a commentary on the artefacts that they choose to view, of the kind that might given to a museum curator. By constructing a tightly-coupled integration of speech and language technology, the project aims to evaluate the usefulness of considering SPEECH GENERATION to be an integrated task, rather than the simple concatenation of NLG and text-to-speech synthesis. The results will be distilled for generic use into an enhanced version of an existing speech synthesis markup language.
