Many UK manufacturing industries depend in a vital way on processing soft solids of various sorts including liquid suspensions of aggregated colloidal particles. Processes like detergency or catalysis often involve particle aggregates at a liquid solid interface. In this work we will develop simulation methods to study the effect of fluid flow on the mixing and dispersion of aggregated particle clusters in restricted geometries such as the vicinity of a hard wall. We will implement two algorithms, one a well-tested procedure, but not yet applied to three-dimensional particle clusters near a wall, the other a new fictitious particle method which offers a prospect of speeding up simulation while reducing the computer resources needed. The second method will be tested and calibrated against the results of the first algorithm. The outcome of the research will include portable software packages usable in many important problems in process industries dealing with pharmaceuticals, detergents, oils and foods. In addition, by enabling us to study the individual particle trajectories as well as the global evolution of the clusters the research will add to our fundamental understanding of the dynamics of such complex systems.
