Summary on Grant Application Form |
Under grant GR/H95679 we have developed a 90-180GHz cw spectrometer that international experts in the field consider state of the art and an optimum method for extending ESR to even higher frequencies. In this proposal we offer a number of ways forward, varying in cost from 338, 031 to 489, 651, to take advantage of the technical lead we have established to provide a high field ESR facility for users in the UK.The first priority is to make the present spectrometer a stand-alone facility which requires a minimum of an 8T magnet. However, a 12T magnet would be preferable to extend the current frequency range to more than 300ghz, and be competitive with other recently proposed systems in Europe and the States. A number of other options are offered including coherent pulsed operation at 90GHz and the addition of an ENDOR facility. A substantial period would be devoted to service measurements (in collaboration with National ESR services in Manchester) and a state of the art cw facility operating at 180GHz would be available from day 1 of the grant.
