Summary on Grant Application Form
Numerical simulations of gas-particle flow are now commonly applied to many industrial problems. However, whether the simulations thrack individual particles or consider the particle phase to be a continuum, the way in which interparticle and particle-wall conditions are modelled has a significant influence on the flow prediction. The central issue which has to be addressed is whether particles stick or rebound upon collision and, in the case of rebound, the changes that occur in both the linear and rotational kinetic energy. Nevertheless, many researchers assume a constant coefficient of resitiution and, in areas of filtraction and particle deposition studies, it is often assumed that particles which come into contact with each other ot with a containing surface do not rebound. The first aim of the proposed project is to perform both analytical and numerical studies of solid particle impact with a wall in order to improve the predictions of th rebound kinematics. In addition we intend to simulate the oblique impact of small irregular shaped agglomerates with a wall in order to identify the 'real particle' react when subjected to wall collisions. The overall objective is to provide data on particale wall interactions in a form which can be incorporated into CFD codes used to model gas-particle flows.
