Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed work focuses on understanding the constraints of, and dealing with the legacy software elements at the heart of financial IT systems. The program has 4 themes, a main theme, two supporting themes and a background theme. The main theme will seek to identify structure and methods required to move from the existing dependency on legacy systems and practice of creating new legacy systems to a practice based on a strategy for continuous system evolution. The work will define a migration strategy to support this change of philosophy. The supporting themes will involve:1. The modelling of aspects of the central legacy IT system at Schroders in terms of how, and to what degree, it constrains their ability to respond to business process change, and2. Understanding and supporting the needs of conventional mainframe IT professionals who find it difficult to combine their legacy support role with the development of new Object based systems.Developments in the area of distributed component technology and co-operating business objects will strongly influence the mechanisms used to handle legacy IT. The background theme will track developments in this rapidly evolving field and make contributions to international standards development in the area.
