Summary on Grant Application Form
The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the structure and stability of lyotropic liquid-crystalline phases will be studied by conventional and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The amphiphiles chose for study are synthetic phosphlipids and glycolipids, and their mixtures with fatty acids and fatty alcohols. These data, in conjunction with volumetric and thermal measurements as functions of pressure, will be analysed within the framework of recent framework of recent curvature elasticity theories of phases stability. The results will yield invaluable insights into the relative importance of chain disorder, packing frustration and preferred interfacial curvature in controlling phase structure and stability.
